Back to work!

Tis the season when ballet dancers begin preparing for the Nutcracker. Auditions are right around the corner, and most dancers have just had a break. A small vacation is always nice, but dancers soon need to get back to ballet.

Auditions can be the most stressful time of the year, so dancers like to start getting ready early. They have to learn the parts before the audition from past videos, which are sold in the office of Valley Dance Theatre. Our choreography is unique, so it is necessary to keep a disc at home.

For the most important role in the Nutcracker, the Sugarplum Fairy, rehearsals have already started for the dancers that have been given the chance to audition. This part is normally set aside for only the company dancers because it is such a difficult role. There is intense partnering and two exhausting pieces the Sugarplum Fairy must perform. These rehearsals not only help the dancers, but also the teachers. The teachers will be able to tell who is ready for the role before the auditions to make it an easier decision.

Auditions can last all day and be very taxing, but it is important to remember that every part, whether it is considered big or small, is important in building the story of the Nutcracker. If you have auditions coming up, good luck and don't forget to enjoy yourself!
